The FTSE contains shares from a number of prominent industries, including finance, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals and consumer goods. Due to the diversity and number of stocks that make up the FTSE 100 index, it’s considered an accurate representation of the UK’s economy. The leading FTSE 100 companies by market capitalisation include BP, GlaxoSmithKline, Unilever, British American Tobacco and HSBC. They are often referred to as blue-chip stocks, due to their longevity within the UK’s premier stock market.
